Basically, auxiliary verbs are function words, a type of closed class which have a grammatical function as opposed to content words.Content words  are an open class of lexical words. An auxiliary verb adds functional or grammatical content to the information of an another verb which is called  the main verb. Auxiliary verbs are also called helping verbs.

Examples:
I am reading a story.
He has written the book.
Would you shut the door
Do you like banana?
We must obey our teachers.
Will you go with me to Kolkata?
I have read tomorrow's lesson.
